Since 1971, Army dog handlers in Northern Ireland have been identified by a small red enamel and gilt paw badge worn above and to the left of their cap badge. Authorized by Major General Peter Leng, then Commander Land Forces Northern Ireland and Colonel Commandant Royal Army Veterinary Corps, this badge is the smallest in the Army. The red color was chosen for its martial significance and to symbolize the bloodied paws of Army dogs injured while working amid rubble. In 1998, with the increased use of helmets in operations, the unit was permitted to wear an identifying badge on the upper right arm instead of the cap badge, although the red paw beret badge continues to be worn.
