Most people will have seen veterans on an armistice parade with their shiny medals on their jackets.

To most veterans a medal is something that they will be proud of and want to show them off in all their glory and whether it be just one medal or a whole group of 10 they will want them mounting so that the medals can be worn with pride.

The main styles of mounting are ‘Swing’ and ‘Court’. Swing mounting is as it says. The medal is suspended from the ribbon and attached to a brooch pin so the meal will swing. This has a distinct sound when they hit each making a ‘CHING’. However it can damage the medals as the will end up with dents, chips and wear to the ribbons.

Court mounting is where the medals have a backing board behind them. The ribbon is wrapped around the backing board and also suspends the medal and all the ribbons are attached to the backing board. It is thought that on a parade Queen Victoria heard jingling from her soldier’s medals and decided that they should be mounted differently so no noise would be made from them.

Today Medals are mounted in both styles depending the unit regulations, dress regulations and also personal preference.  Court mounting is still the popular style as some say they look smarter and uniform like.

As medal mounters we have to make sure that every set we do is to the highest of standard, as you want them to look perfect so they can be worn with pride. It takes an exceptional eye for detail as nearly every set we do is unique. This is certainly one of those jobs where the customer really does come first and the end product has to be immaculate. One ribbon slightly creased or the medals not level can make the set look tatty or shoddy or even in some cases (not my words) that the customer has been ripped off.

Manchester Medals is committed to providing an exceptional mounting service that is of the highest standard. We have had sets that have been paraded in front of royalty and sets that have been on television. All the customers have told us that they wore their medals with pride knowing that they had a professional service. We use only the best for the best to make sure 100% satisfaction.
